Queenstown to Milford Sound Road trip and back in March'25.

Heaps of places for fuel, the road is sealed so it's not an issue with driving unless you don't drive often, pull over if you have traffic behind you. Best thing to do would be to make sandwiches and get some snacks so you can stop when you see somewhere nice. Fill up in chch then again at the NPD in hoki as it's the cheapest place on the coast on your route. Hokis nice place to stretch your legs on the beach.

If youre driving, leave Queenstown at 5am. Cruises start about 10am. Its a long drive.

We would be having 2 persons capable of driving, so driving long hours should not be an issue. But in your experience, are the roads safe to drive in dark?

Not a lot of street lighting, and the road out of Queenstown to Kingston is quite windy so if you’re not used to windy roads, with minimal lighting, it can be a challenge in the dark. Once you get to Te Anau, the sun will be up and it makes it easier to drive up the even windier road to Milford Sound.
