Gender identity

Influence is not anywhere synonymous with change. Your gender identity is literally the result of social norms right now. Why? Because gender is the result of social norms. To phrase it in your words, Gender isn't real. It's not a physical thing. Sex is, but gender is a construction of perception and identity that is embodied and performed. I'm using Judith Butler's definition of Gender Performativity in her book, "Gender Trouble." I highly recommend reading it if you can since it's a great gateway into understanding gender as a whole.

I do agree with you about gender as a performance but I also think gender for many is something deeper than that and is more than just not identifying with the current social norms attached to their genders. Many trans people in this thread have describe their gender not by the social norms but by feeling like they had both the wrong gender and the wrong sex. Like there was something wrong with their body, not with their gender. So I guess it's different for different people.

You aren't born with a gender. You learn it. Sometimes people learn it in a way that they aren't comfortable with. We don't perform gender because we want to fit in. We perform it because it's what is expected of us.

I guess my entire point of contention with your post is that I don't at all believe that your gender is only the performance you feel comfortable putting on. Or the learned behaviours associated with your sex.
