Notes on Hiring A Marketing Assistant

I’m currently hiring for a marketing assistant position (remote) and have noticed a few things that I found interesting compared to hiring 5 years ago or so.

  1. The number of applicants is much higher than before. There seems to be a larger number of people working in marketing than I can remember. After posting on one job board I have had over 125 applicants in less than 24 hours.

  2. So many people with SEO and Social Media experience. Not just that, but the number of people with experience in Canva and graphic design is higher than I’d expect.

  3. People are making lateral moves and even taking a step back. This is an assistant position and even though it’s robust in areas covered under the roll, I’m getting applications with previous director, manager, and coordinator roles. The job has salary range posted that tops out about $50k for 40 hours, so I can’t imagine salary being the reason.

  4. There is less experience in other areas I’d expect like AdWords and Analytics. I’ve only seen a couple with email marketing and trade show experience listed in resumes.
