[Discussion] Trap Beat High Hat Pattern
I’ve been on a rabbit hole listening to old southern rap from when I was in grade school. And it occurred to me - the trap high hat pattern has actually been around for forever. Mannie Fresh did it on Back that Azz Up - https://open.spotify.com/track/6o2g1BJvtYQssH84kBYs7y?si=A0iL50RjTR-FDc0jsqK-MA&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A6wpqS71CJr3I0dLguYiZdJ
At the time, I can remember that most rap DID NOT sound anything like this. Go listen to a Just Blaze beat on a Jay Z album like Black Album. It will sound “old school” to kids now because it doesn’t have that high hat pattern, and Just Blaze was kind of following the standard boom bap drum pattern of the time.
Now, fucking everything has the Mannie Fresh style high hats in it. I am trying to figure out exactly where it all started. Was it Mannie? Someone else? Did it originate in New Orleans or Atlanta? Somewhere else?
Anyway, thought it’d be an interesting discussion. Especially for ppl who grew up in the 90s and 00s who can remember it getting popular for the first time with dudes like Jeezy, Gucci, etc.
