Best cars for transporting road bikes?

Currently I own a Honda Clarity - when I purchased it 4 years ago I didn’t think to check if a bike could really fit inside.

I did find one YT video where they were able to fit two bikes inside (one in the back seat the other in the trunk) but I’ve not been able to accomplish this.

I’ve since had a hitch receiver installed and use a Kuat Sherpa 2.0, which does work but I have some longer trips planned in 2025 for double centuries in SoCal etc. (for example looking at a DC in Orange County- I live in the SF Bay Area) consequently I’m starting to research vehicles that could fit a standard road bike with the front wheel removed. I do use the locking cable but realize that’s just a temporary deterrent and a 300-450 mile drive without safely being able to take bathroom breaks doesn’t sound appealing.

What I’m looking for - not a huge vehicle, not pricey, insurance friendly, ICE or plug in hybrid as I live in an apartment without charging capabilities. I don’t want to have to make modifications to a vehicle to accommodate a bike (or two bikes!) as I’ve seen some of the members in my cycling club have done.

Again I’m just in the research process here. My current vehicle is paid off and really enjoying no payments but…you know.

Suggestions and real world experiences appreciated! TIA.

Edit - clearly I will have to bring my bike with me to test drive and make doubly sure that I can actually fit my bike in the back by myself! Kicking myself for not doing that with the Clarity although it’s been a very good car for me otherwise.

Edit #2 - well I watched the video again, took notes, then followed exactly what the guy did and success!!! I can get the bike into the Clarity after all! I still want to get a different car though but obviously I can take my time and put money aside for a down payment in the meantime :)
