Why exactly were the elders so afraid of Eames getting " up there" ?

They're all apparently extremely powerful and some of them are former powerful witches or other beings ala Kevin the projection kid and they all have that powerful lighting ability and who knows what else??

How hard would it have been to defeat Eames with just one elder?
