Are there any freelancers here based in Philippines who charge premium as if they're from a 1st world country?
Hi everyone. I just wanna get this off my chest as I realized that a lot of the Filipino freelancers are seen as cost-efficient labor by people from 1st world countries. No wonder why the BPO industry is also strong here in PH(aside from India) cuz we're obviously hardworking + good in English. When you go to job platforms such as OnlineJobs PH, I just feel like Filipinos are marketed to foreigners as cheap labor. Parang ang exploitative sya in a sense
I remember I asked a potential employer from UK to pay me higher, but he's hesitant to pay me that high cuz he said that I'm from the Philippines despite my super duper stellar portfolio. Like napapa-isip ako: if I can give the same output as someone coming from a 1st world country, then why do I allow myself to be lowballed? It got me thinking: should I just accept a low salary just bcus I live in a country w/ low cost of living?
It made me also think if getting a degree from 1st world country would grant me rights to charge 1st world rates in the freelancing industry.
My head really hurts why a lot of Filipino freelancers do not position themselves internationally compared sa mga freelancers abroad who are charging really high. Parang may culture tayo dito sa Pinas na okay lang tayo sa ganyan na sahod just bcus na mas mura ang cost of living dito satin (which I think isnt even the case anymore due to inflation)
I am wondering: are there any Filipino freelancers here who charge 1st world rates? I think I know a handful of Filipino freelancers in Philippines earning 7 figures per month. If you charge premium, i have the ff questions:
(1) How do you find these premium clients who are okay with charging 1st world rates? Can you pls share your process? How do you position/market yourself?
(2) Can you pls care to share your niche din + how much you're charging per client (like kahit average lang). And how much do you earn per month with all the clients u work with combined?
(3) Do you think it's a challenge to charge premium rates if you're a Filipino??? I just feel like Filipinos are generally seen as "cheap labor" so I worry my ethnicity and where I live will be a hindrance to charging premium
(4) Does having a degree from a 1st world country grant me more rights to charge 1st world rates? Why are there so many clients hesitant to pay Filipinos high just because of where they live from? Say, If I go to Harvard(say an Ivy League education) in US for my masters for example, and I go back sa Philippines after graduating, does that grant me bragging rights to charge American rates since Im American-educated already? (assuming I handle clients from the US as well for my freelance business) I mean it if a lot of money was spent for my US degree, then why the hell would I settle with a 3rd world level salary after going back home? Also makes me think whether opting to have a business is a good workaround for someone w/ that level of education and just completely let go of the employee mindset
(5) Do you think UPWORK and OnlineJobs PH are breeding grounds for cheap labor/exploitation????
I wanna know your thoughts. Cuz this frustrates me. Di ko naman kasalanan na pinanganak ako sa 3rd world country where the economic opportunities arent just that appealing. My head just hurts cuz I have relatives living in 1st world countries w/ high incomes(who are pushing me to study abroad) and I just realized that the income gap is so so so big compared here sa Philippines.
