When do people actually put their winter tires on?
Getting the notifications that it’s time to swap my tires but it seems bonkers to me to be putting winter tires on when we have 20 degree weather still. But then there are those mountain highway laws that require them beginning Oct. 1… I want to wait until we have consistent temps in single digits because I don’t like the idea of decreasing the lifespan of my tires because of an outdated law that doesn’t account for a warming planet. Am I overestimating how much additional wear the tires will have by putting them on when it’s still so warm out? What is everyone else doing? Would ICBC not cover me if I was in an accident on one of these highways without winter tires even if it was 25 degrees out and not a flake of snow?
ETA: Just want to thank everyone for their responses and sharing their thoughts and approaches. What I’ve learned is that changing the tires even though it is still warm out won’t decrease their lifespan by any significant margin and it’s not worth the risk of not changing them on time. Really appreciate everyone who took the time to respond - thank you! 🙏🏻
