Weird interaction on the bus

Earlier today I was going to get the rail bus, some guy on it asked me if he could borrow like $10 to go home cause he got his phone and wallet stolen last night. He said that it happened after work as he fell asleep on the bus (weird since it was suburban Auckland with no overnight jobs to my knowledge nearby and he wasn't wearing a uniform). He then also later he said he got no sleep all night and was trying to get home (again weird as this was all happening around 4pm) he claimed to not have a hop card n that he needed to go home to beach haven. I then told him the bus driver might let him on if he asks. (he then said yeah but the bus from Britomart to beach haven wouldn't let him on for free but said he might be able to get an uber? (not sure exactly how this would be done without a phone) all in all a weird interaction, just got me wondering what is the objective/goal or if he was genuine.
