230609 r/RhythmHive will go dark from June 12-14 PT to protest Reddit's API changes

Hello r/RhythmHive,

The mod team is back for the first time in a long while with an important notice about the imminent opt-in blackout beginning June 12 PT in solidarity with developers of third-party apps.

What prompted this?

Third-party apps that enhance the accessibility and quality of Reddit will soon be shut down due to a recent policy change.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced their switch from a free API to a paid level that will effectively kill all third-party apps including Apollo and Narwhal, and many others. Developers will be charged exorbitant amounts to run their apps from July 1, forcing them to shut down as none can reasonably afford to pay sky-high prices within only a month of announcement. Many bots including moderation bots operating across Reddit will also be impacted in the same way.

For more information, please refer to this infographic and this post from dedicated subreddit r/Save3rdPartyApps as informative resources.

What's happening?

r/RhythmHive will be joining 50k (and counting) subreddits in going dark. The community will be set to private so that only approved users may access the subreddit as normal.

This will last for 48 hours beginning from 12am on June 12 to 11:59pm on June 14 PT. The aim is to push Reddit to change their policy, but we may continue to stay dark until more reasonable and tenable terms are offered. Users may use a pre-filled timezone converter to see what local times the subreddit will be unavailable from.

While we aren't a particularly large community, it takes everyone for efforts like this to succeed. The mod team would greatly appreciate it if you also participated and boycotted Reddit during that time. Please do not harass those who do not participate in the boycott.

Thank you for your understanding. The mod team will aim to be back soon with an announcement regarding subreddit infrastructure soon.
