4-team Playoff for the 1st Overall Draft pick (18 game season)
When the NFL expands the regular season to 18 games, there will be less meaningful games with teams resting starters the last couple of weeks.
So what about doing an in season 4-team playoff with the bottom 4 teams after 16 games to decide who gets the 1st overall pick?
Using this season as an example, after 16 games it was:
- Patriots (3-13) SOS .469
- Titans (3-13) SOS .511
- Browns (3-13) SOS .539
- Giants (3-13) SOS .549
17th game
- Titans @ Patriots
- Giants @ Browns
You’d have to use flex scheduling and have their originally scheduled opponents (Chargers, Jags, Colts and Dolphins) play eachother.
If the Patriots and Giants both win:
18th game
Giants @ Patriots (for the 1st overall pick)
Browns @ Titans (for the 3rd overall pick)
Then if the Patriots and Titans both win the final draft order would be:
1) Patriots 2) Giants 3) Titans 4) Browns
The remaining draft order would be decided the same as usual. You’d also have to schedule all division matchups in the first 16 games to ensure that isn’t affected.
This way all the paper bag mask fans can actually be rooting for their teams to win at the end of an otherwise depressing season.
Rather than Giants fans being pissed off at Drew Lock for pulling out a shock win against the Colts. Or the Patriots ruining their draft pick because they beat the Bills JV squad in week 18 this year.
