Staying in starter home

Has anyone ended up staying in what they intended to be their starter home?

Partner and I bought our house 10 years ago never intending to be here this long. Then kids happened, Covid happened, we've never found the drive to move, and I'm starting to think that if we'd really wanted to then we would have done it by now.

The house has good sized bedrooms (and the right number of them), it's just downstairs space and size of outdoor space that's an issue. Soundproofing is crap and at some point very soon it'll likely need a new roof and a new kitchen.

But - location is great for us, super close to family and support network, kids are happy in school and don't want to move. And it's cheap - we could clear the mortgage in the next 5 years. Moving to a house of the spec we'd want would at least double our mortgage costs, if not more.

Am I silly to think of staying? It's almost felt like the reverse of a sunk cost fallacy, like not wanting to put money in because we'll be moving on. But I'm starting to think we'd be better off just putting our money into this place.
