Gear Gone at Pine Woods

Hi - as I was fighting off various lepers and wolves in Pine Wood, I suddenly realized my weapon was gone and I was just punching them. Then my vest. Then my pants. Then my boots. Like I lost each one after each fight. I was able to craft back a club and basic pants and shirt. Those didn't disappear. Just the ones I had picked from loot and was equipped with. I didn't ever see a pop up text or anything. Is this usual? Did I miss something?
