Why were there so many scenes of Marie peeing

There is so much discussing of pee with her. Her powers are introduced when she sits down on the toilet. Her questions to Emma are about how she pees in painted-on pants. Not to mention the weirdo peeing scene with her and Emma at the gala. It's a little odd, no?
