How to stay balanced as an empath?

I very much struggle from detaching myself from the energies around me. In order to protect myself, I tend to withdraw and isolate myself from time to time. I do feel fine for a while but then get restless again even in that islolation. When I go back into the world, i feel fine for a while and then the story of feeling overwhelmed begins again.

How do I break this exhausting cycle and become more balanced. I will really appreciate the opinion of my fellow empaths on this matter.
