12v Motor, resistor needed question

Given a small DC motor (fan) is rated 12v / 0.110a. If there is no resistor, it will draw .11 amps, correct?

Now if I want to slow the motor/fan down, what kind of resistor is needed, one that reduces amps or volts? For a small load like this, I'm thinking a voltage resistor, but if the load were much larger/bigger a different method would be used. Am I thinking about this the right way?

Basic noob question, sorry.
