Any birders here? I saw something I can’t figure out at Chapman lake.
On 205 right at Chapman Lake there’s a dead tree at the waters edge. Driving by yesterday I saw a very tall 2-3ft and thin bird sitting in this tree. He seemed to have a ruddy (rust colored) neck and a grey or slightly grey blue body. I admittedly only got a look for a quarter of a second, but that was the impression I got.
Maybe a little blue under just the right light could look like this?
Anyone know of this bird? If I didn’t know the place and time of year, I would have guessed a juvenile tricolored heron… but they’re rare here and wouldn’t have that plumage this time of year.
Maybe a glossy or white faced ibis? I think I would have noticed the bill and also rare 🤷🏼♂️
Someone please help me out… this is driving me nuts.
Edit: I’m beginning to lean towards a little blue heron. I saw a few photos online where they were approaching the coloring in the right light.
Also, if we were on the coast, I’d say it was a reddish egret. They’re uncommon to begin with and completely out of habitat… so this is unlikely.
Edit 2: more digging g found this photo of a little blue heron: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/50aa3c76e4b0a8a5e3e46991/1591120561632-OPG32A10P6M8TH13QKGI/Surf_851_9853.jpg
They’re listed as “sparse” by Sibley, but not completely unlikely… and the bird in the background looked exactly like what I saw… so that’s what I’m gonna go with.
