Critical Role and D20 in shared universe? Spyre in the age of arcanum? *Spoilers for Downfall and light spoilers for all campaigns set in Spyre*
Bare with me this is going to be big hear me out energy.
Last night the final 6hr episode of critical role downfall premiered. I am not a big critical role fan so I might stumble over the lore a little, however the basics seem pretty simple. Downfall takes place during the Calamity, a very turbulent time in Critical Role's world Exandria. During this time uber powerful magical users flew a little two close to the sun leading to civilation being destroyed in a war between the Gods.
Side Note: A while back Brennan DMed a campaign for them that showed the starting of Calamity with Lou and Aabria and it was very good.
Downfall (also DMed by Brennan, and also really good) focuses on the Gods themselves working under a truce to destroy a God killing weapon created by the last great wizards of the era. During this 3 episode series we follow the Gods who have assumed mortal forms as they sneak in and destroy the last great city of Aeor. In the final episode the might of Aeor (Dragons, machines, demons, angels, powerful wizards) are put up against the might of the Gods(the PCs).
In preparation for this huge fight one of the PCs (the matron of ravens , goddess of death, played by laura bailey) dons the armor of Ayda.
Yes Ayda Ayda
Now this could be a slip up, the armor of Ayda is a home brewed version of the Armor of Agathys that does fire damage instead of cold damage (I think). After its initial mention in Downfall, it became clear that they were reflavoring the Armor of Agathys to deal necrotic damage (goddess of death = necrotic damage get it).
Side Note 2: The spell was referred to both as Armor of Ayda (before combat) and Armor of Agathys (during combat)
Now hear me out. What do we know about Solace?
It is hugely modern and full of great technical and magical wonders. These wonders don't seem to exist outside of it. Every show in set in Solace, is full of these wonders. From gigantic floating skyships to crystal cell phones, to AV tech , to literal Arcades, to whatever Arthur Augefort does (he literally moved the sun).
What am I getting at?
What IF the entire world of Spyre was a giant floating sky civilization, so big that it gave the illusion of being its own world. What if, because of the might of Aruthur Augefort and the magic/technical prowess of solace it was brought down to kneel by the gods. What if the Matron of Ravens (a once mortal wizard who became a God) acquired the Armor of Ayda and kept it in name of another great wizard dedicated to her craft.
What IF the events of the Spyre campaigns happen in the far flung past of the world of Exandria?
What If it is all connected?
