New cat wants out of sanctuary room, resident cat isn’t ready

Hey friends! We just adopted a very sweet and playful one year old male cat and we also have a (soon to be) nine year old female cat. She is very chill and calm so I knew there would be a lot of adjustments needed on her part.

We have our new boy set up in a separate room with his toys, water, food and litter but after two days there he wants out and is ready to explore! He cries when alone there now and he is just ready. BUT, our resident cat is not. She needs more time to get used to him (through the glass doors that’s separate them) before he completely disrupt his routine.

I feel so bad about keeping our new cat in the sanctuary room, but I know we need to give it more time. Any advice?
