Alameda or Berkeley?

We are a family of 4, one adult is a full time parent, the other goes to SF 2-3 days a week. 2 small children in daycare.

We are considering a move to Alameda or Berkeley right now. Biggest concern is a family oriented community (parks, activities, other families in neighborhood) successful public schools and commute to SF. Budget is ~$1.75 all in.

If you had to choose between Alameda or Berkeley, which one would you go for? If you’re familiar with the neighborhoods in each, which area would you choose?
