Would you/should I ask my neighbours to stop using the washing machine in the morning (4/5am)/causing thumping noises?

Hi all,

So I've recently moved into some ex-council flats in London. They're pretty nice ones to be fair, but one thing I didn't think about in these Victorian (purpose built) flats, is the sound insulation between floors isn't great.

So I'll hear loud talking and more importantly banging or thudding.

I'm getting used to it in general. But above my bedroom, at least half the week, at around 4 or 5am (as part of the morning) (and soemtimes 2 or 3am at night), the upstairs neighbours will use the washing machine, or some kind of food machine or just generally sort out their kitchen and will make a lot of thudding and banging noises. It sounds quiet on a recording, but in the room, it's pretty disturbing (and feels intrusive given it's my bedroom which is theoretically a quiet area, particularly so early in the morning).

So my question is, am I in my right to complain and ask them to stop? I tried before but their response was "why should I change my routine" - which I have some sympathy for...but equally I really need to sleep.

So wanted to sanity check myself with others + hear any suggestions you all may have for sorting this out...(Moving out in the next few years isn't an option unfortunately)
