Is French Quarter safe after dark with kids?

We are going to be staying at Place D'armes. We will have a 9 and 15 year olds with us. Is it safe to walk around after dark? Are there certain streets we should avoid. And i mean to avoid getting robbed, not drunk tourists. Are we ok to walk from the street cars to our hotel?
