I draft new recruits into "Nursery" squads that are kept out of harm's way. When an opening appears in a non-Nursery squad, I just search for the most experienced Nursery trainee. This helps to keep inexperienced fighters from getting killed.
This is huge. I don't know how many escape pods I've dumped into the black or "destroyed" because I didn't know what to do with them.
