Superman... disappointing???
I mean this with the most respect to the band... I wait patiently over a year for the release of superman! When they uploaded the BBC Introducing Glastonbury 2023 video on YouTube I was instantly obsessed with the song! As I watched more videos and learnt all the lyrics before the release I can safely say it quickly became my favourite wunderhorse song. It is for this reason I was so incredibly disappointed when they finally released the studio version... I tried to convince myself that I like it and whilst the song is still good and I stick it on all the time, it simply doesn't hit nearly as hard aa it should It simply lacks everything that made ne love it so much in the first place..
Firstly, there's hardly any build up, whatsoever, there's a little feedback and then the volume and instruments stay the same at the PEAK of the song.
Secondly, Jacobs vocals on "Reaching maximum speeds" stay monotone throughout which isn't what he does live, where he stretches his vocals to the limit sending shivers down your spine, feeling the ache and emotion in his voice.
As well as this, there's no big crash in the climax, but if were beinf honest, the whole use of the drums is simply wasteful. This song is BEGGING quite literally BEGGING for a massive drum crescendo with crashes and enourmous power but instead we've got these bongo things throughout.
Like I say I really mean no disrespect, the band havent got a bad tune, I love them to bits and have seen them 3 times, i think Jacob Slater will be remembered as one of the best songwriters of his time. I just think that since they said they wanted this album to be raw and untamed, they've played it so safe with Superman, when it really could have been one of, if not the best thing they have done.
