Reasons why a small nation would split apart

I’m trying to find reasons that an agrarian tribal nation would split apart. They are monotheistic, matriarchal, in the beginning stages of agrarian society, and in a humid subtropical/oceanic climate along the coast. There are other nations to the south and northwest but not a threat. Any thoughts? :)
