How hard should basswood be?
So I got a box of beavercraft basswood blocks to try carving and struggled with it being very hard to carve. I just figured it was due to me having weak hands and just kept my knife extra sharp but I've got to the last block in the box and suddenly it's cutting like butter with a super dull coping saw and a non sharpened knife. Compared to the block I carved just yesterday this is like an absolute dream lol. Even the pencil is denting it if I draw too hard.
EDIT I was trying to figure out if this butter like wood was how basswood is normally but then started properly carving it and it's just weirdly crumbling rather than cutting so I think that answered my question that this is not a good block. 👌. Curious if anyone knows why it would be crumbling when I try and carve along the grain 🥲.
