Increasingly concerned about safety outside of my local grocery store (Smith’s)

I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences regarding a growing concern I've had lately at my local Smith's grocery store on Charleston and Hualapai. Over the past year, I've noticed a significant increase in individuals begging for money in the parking lot, particularly right outside the store or even just outside the front door of the grocery store.

I completely understand that many people are facing tough times; we’ve all seen how hard the job market has been. However, I can't help but feel uneasy when approached multiple times by individuals asking for money, often with stories about needing help to buy groceries for their kids. While I want to be compassionate and supportive of those going through difficult situations, I also feel that some of these encounters seem more like scams than genuine pleas for help.

I’ve had several uncomfortable experiences where I was approached while walking to my car, and it’s left me feeling increasingly unsafe. It’s hard to shake off the feeling that I should be wary, especially considering the rising reports of crime in parking lots and near grocery stores.

I’m not someone who typically goes to management to voice concerns, but this issue has made me reconsider actually going into the store. Has anyone else experienced something similar at this location or any other grocery stores in the area? To note, I’ve never had anyone ask me for money outside if Trader Joe’s in downtown Summerlin.

Am I overreacting? Is this the new norm?
