Why does Marquette feel different compared to the rest of the UP?

Genuine question, and not to be too political.

Seriously, why does Marquette feel different from other UP towns?

Why out of all the places in the UP, Marquette is the "hub" for stores, restaurants, hospital, etc.

I understand that the college, and natural beauty plays a role, but there's other universities in the UP, and other beautiful locations here as well.

Almost like the Traverse City, or Ann Arbor of the UP
