Potty Training Question - Boy Specific

We are currently potty training my son. We are training him to do everything sitting down on a seat that sits over the regular toilet. My question is in regards to aiming/splashing. If I were to just let him have at it, he'd pee over the front edge of the seat. I've been trying to teach him to aim his penis downwards but it seems like it then hits the side wall of the toilet and splashes back up into him which he hates. What am I doing wrong here? Wrong seat? Not aiming far enough down? This seems so silly but I haven't been able to figure it out and I don't want him to get discouraged with the toilet because he hates the splashing.
