Anyone got experience with permethrin while camping in the field?

Looking to start tarp camping in the field. I hate bugs, and during summer they are pretty abundant out here. The best advice I got was to use permethrin on your sleeping bag and tarp to keep the bastards off of you for the night, and maybe reapply when you wake up to piss in the middle of the night. Can anyone attest to this?
