Mr Mercedes question

Hey everyone,

So, I’m only like 150 pages into the book but something is bothering me so I thought I would ask here (please no spoilers for the rest of the book).

Let’s assume Ms. Trelawney did leave the car wide open with the keys in the ignition and a giant neon sign that said please steal my car. Why is it her fault what Brady did with the car when he stole it? Why do the cops blame her? It’s not a crime to forget to lock your car or leave the keys in it.

I don’t understand why she would ever hold blame for what happened.

I read a lot of King books and this is the first time that I’m confused by the world so maybe there is something I’m missing.

Thanks!
