Thoughts on Tomlin from a kinda-impartial viewer
Hey y'all, Saints fan here. My interest in the Steelers has perked up the last few years as I have been dating a Steelers fan. In addition to her, I've always had massive respect for y'all's owners, your history, and your coaches. To me, they exemplify quality leadership, and that's part of what drove me to make this post.
I've been forced to watch the Saints absolutely suck for the last four years (post-Brees, sigh), and to be totally honest, I think that the Steelers and the Saints are not entirely unlike each other at the moment. Yes, we have cap mismanagement issues like CRAZY, but what has defined both of our teams for the last few years is the fact that we didn't draft a QB of the future when our franchise guy was clearly in the twilight of his career.
The two teams' reactions to this has been different: y'all drafted Pickett, then threw Russ and Fields at the wall to see if they stuck. We tried out Jameis, then signed Carr to his wildly overpriced contract. Y'all's defense is clearly better than ours, but that side of both rosters is constructed pretty similarly, specifically in regards to veterans.
All this led me to wonder why y'all made the playoffs this year when we didn't even come close. The clear answer to this is Mike Tomlin. It cannot be overstated how important his leadership has been to y'all's team. I know that the "never had a losing season" thing gets old, but it's repeated for a reason. Y'all truly do not understand how good you have it, and for the life of me, I cannot wrap my head around why people are calling for his firing. There is an unbelievably strong probability that you will not find the right person to replace him, and then guess what? You're stuck right where we are in New Orleans, with no leadership, a bad team, and no clear path to get back to winning.
I'm sure I won't dissuade any of the naysayers, and feel free to call me out for not being a lifelong Steelers fan. All I know is, y'all have it good. You're a few pieces away. And I promise, it can get so, so, SO much worse.
