review of Section 31 reviews
So I have a policy of seeing what other movies a reviewer has liked or disliked, to see if their taste is the same as mine. The internet has made this easy, click the byline and you can see everything else they've written. So judge for yourself if you should care about these people's opinions:
Engadget, Daniel Cooper: Hated the movie, but not a film critic. He's a senior editor and "futurist" with some really dumb opinions on gadgets. He is apparently their resident Star Trek expert and writes about anything related to it, but that's not an actual qualification to write about film. His opinion can and should be ignored.
Hollywood Reporer, Frank Scheck: Hated the movie. Actual film critic, so he has chops, BUT he liked Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Dear Santa, and Transformers One. He and I do not have remotely the same taste, but YMMV.
Polygon, Susana Polo: Found it enjoyable but very weird and somewhat limited. She's a culture critic who writes a lot about comics, tv, and movies. Loved the Lower Decks finale, seems to be on the fence about Dune: Prophecy, disliked Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Sounds like she and I would get along.
IGN, Jordan Hoffman: Hated it. Actual film critic but with a very short resume, I get the sense he's young. Liked the Three Body Problem on Netflix and loved Asteroid City. He and I would have a fight in a parking lot.
Roger Ebert Dot Com, Clint Worthington: "Rebel Moon-level fiasco". Real critic. There's zero overlap between what he reviews and what I watch, except for Sausage Party: Foodtopia, which he tried to review as tho it were art. I have no idea how to judge his taste.
Gizmodo, James Whitbrook: Hated it. Pop culture writer and Star Trek fan who seems obsessed with DS9; who the hell writes two articles about it in 2024? (and what editor signed off on that?) Liked the Lower Decks finale. His criticisms might be legit, but part of his issue seems to be that it doesn't engage with DS9's Section 31 plotline, which...how could it? It's set before that. I dunno what to do with this guy.
So, I'm basically ignoring all the reviews. They're unjudgeable, or have different taste from me, or stuck in a previous era of Trek. I'm going in with an open mind and hoping to enjoy it.
