Combining some B/X modules to run solo…
Took T1 and B2, both of which I’ve run as a DM several times and played solo a few.
Used Oracle rolls (yes/no) on important NPCs and asked lots of questions to fundamentally shake up the feel and even the structure of the modules.
This resulted in a combination of module plots by asking questions re: factions like “are these orcs allied with the raiders?” Or “does this band of cultists have any connection to the guild hall at the keep?” And so on.
The biggest thing I did was add in lots and lots of simple quests by scanning both modules and asking “does this person or location have a quest?”
Which led to the smith at the keep needing new tools from hommlet, the trader needing furs, and so on.
Made one of the towers in the keep a wizards tower for more quests.
Allowed my PCs to buy potions from the chapel but only a 25% chance of replenishment each week.
Doing a lot of this on the fly keeps from too much prep and makes the game keep rolling.
Been a blast so far, but after two excursions to the Moathouse I’m using the oracle to determine Lareth, the antagonist’s response to these attacks, resulting in restocking and other clever trickery for the party to deal with.
I’ll do a write up that’ll be like sort of a toolbox for adding on to these modules and running them solo soon!
