Vans Invado Pro heel lock pain... Tips?

Recently purchased the vans Invado boots. Upgrading from a cheap pair of boots of marketplace and thought I would love the heel lock I was reading about as I had a lot of lift in my heels with my old boots. On Friday I used them for the first time and OUCH! does that heel lock dig in and hurt. The weird thing was I was only experiencing it in my right boot but my left boot felt completely comfortable.

Is this user error? A difference in how I laced the boot? I played with the adjustments for the boa on how tight it lose it was on my heel but nothing seemed to help. Is there a break in period and this will improve?

Has anybody else experienced this with the vans heel lock system?

Thanks! Just looking for insight and comparable experiences so I can decide if I should tough it out or return them and get a different boot. (Purchased from REI so I have a year to decide before I return them.)
