Controversial Take: Sim wheels don't need a screen
I've been shopping for a GT/F1 style wheel for my rig. I had a really good discussion with a friend who asked why I needed a screen in the wheel. It caused me to seriously consider the question.
In real life you obviously have no telemetry or overlays. If you want to know something about the car, it needs to be on a display somewhere.
F1 teams put that screen on the steering wheel because the wheel sits just below the road in their line of sight. Real-estate in an F1 cockpit is tight, so a screen in the wheel makes sense. Even then, Williams F1 had their screen on the dash rather than the wheel.
For a sim setup, all the information can be displayed on your actual display or on a mounted screen. Depending on how your rig is set up, a wheel mounted display might be quite a bit below your track view.
I love how high-tech wheels look with an embedded screen. I'll be happy to admit that a screen on the wheel looks badass and maybe that justifies the purchase all by itself.
But I'm starting to question whether it's actually worth it and I'd love to hear opinions from people with and without an embedded dash.
Edit: I really appreciate all the replies. I figured the community might be a bit divided on this one and there are some good arguments both for and against. In my case I have a fairly upright seating position so I will probably go without. Cheers!
