What non-D&D system would you use for Curse of Strahd?

So when my friends and I first started playing D&D, our GM chose to run Curse of Strahd. They weren't a very good GM so ran the campaign pretty terribly. A few years later I ran Curse of Strahd for a different group and really enjoyed it.

Basically, now that I have less of an interest in GMing 5e, but still want to run Curse of Strahd, I need to look for other systems that could be fun. I'm not necessarily looking to perfectly preserve the heroic fantasy nature of 5e, but more to keep the grim, gothic horror genre intended with the original campaign.

I've looked at both Shadowdark and Forbidden Lands so far, but the two key issues I've found are:

  1. Shadowdark is too lethal for me. I'm not necessarily hoping for total OSR with this, and mainly I don't want players to have to chew through a number of characters at the lower levels.

  2. Forbidden Lands focusses too much on the travel/survival elements of play, which aren't particularly present in Barovia due to its particularly small size.

EDIT: Think I’m set on either Dragonbane or Warhammer Fantast Roleplay, depending on how much crunch my players can take.
