Is 24 “too young” to have a baby?
I’m 24 years old and my husband and I are enthusiastically expecting our first baby girl. I’m 32 weeks and very excited.
I went in for one of my prenatal appointments the other day, and saw a new doctor (not my usual one for my appointments.) She made a comment that I was a higher risk pregnancy because I am “so young.”
I can’t get this out of my head now. Isn’t your mid-20s the “ideal” biological age to have healthy babies? I thought it got riskier as you got older. This isn’t like I’m a teenager. I’m so confused.
I’m not referring to “too young” in the mental/financial sense. I’m sure people have their opinions on that, but I don’t care. We feel ready, we are excited, we can afford it, and we are stable. As far as I’m concerned, that’s our business.
But I have NEVER heard that your 20s is so young to be pregnant that it makes you a high risk pregnancy physically. She was specifically saying I was at a higher risk of pre-eclampsia?? I can’t find any data supporting that.
Has anyone else heard this before? It’s made me anxious and a little upset.
