Traeger or Recteq
tl;dr Traeger Century 885 $1100 or Recteq 590 $764
I had a huge Costco Traeger for 8 years until it died. I wanted to avoid paying for the brand name when I replaced it, and get some newer features like higher temp and a pellet drain, so I bought the Oklahoma Joe's Rider DLX which was a massive disappointment (no grease tray, so it just drips onto the heat shield and catches fire).
I want to get rid of the Oklahoma Joe's and get back to enjoying cooking, but I'm not sure if I want to risk staying outside the cult of Traeger, or go the safer more expensive route.
The Traegers have variable speed and reversible augers, which I like, plus a warming tray and pellet drain. On the other hand, the Recteq is 2/3 the price for the same cook space, and has a higher top temperature (700F vs 500 on the Traeger), plus a larger hopper (with no drain! why?). Then again, Costco's return policy is a great safety net if things don't work out.
What do you all think? Has anyone else left the cult of Traeger and then come back in? Has anyone else been burned (literally) by the Oklahoma Joe's Rider DLX grease fire system ?
