GOYA AWARDS: J.A. Bayona defends KSG amid controversy

Wow the awards race is so long that there is now backlash to the backlash. Filmmaker J.A. Bayona who was at the Goya's tonight and a part of the original jury who rewarded Emilia Perez at Cannes last year said this:

"Everything that is happening with Emilia Pérez makes me sad because there is a great film behind it. Karla Sofía Gascón has made a mistake and her messages are inexcusable. She was surely not prepared to live through everything she has lived through and in such a short time she was not well advised. But in the end, if it is about defending tolerance, tolerance also goes hand in hand with compassion. I think that there is a lynching around Karla Sofía Gascón… and we have to put the brakes on a little and also think about the film and all the people who have worked on that film"

I presumed that the racist tweet controversy was the end of EP's Oscar chances but now I think it may just be the beginning of a new narrative for Emilia Perez. The act of voting for and supporting the film is an act of "bravery" and "defiance" against the those attacking KSG and the movie.
