Fire mage

So I just joined the game. Initially I reached 60 and maxed out my hatchet but when I went to the. Expedition I could not help with ranged bosses. So I went and got a fire mage and I am levelling it up. I am not sure what gem to put on my fire staff and what gem to use on my armor. Can someone help me?
