Final design decisions for my down quilt.
Hey there,
with christmas holidays coming around I want to finally tackle my down quilt project. Currently I own the Mountain Equipment Helium 800 (-8°C comfort) and Forclaz MT 900 10° (+10°C comfort) sleeping bags.
Necessary information for the design decisions:
- I'm 194cm/6'4" tall, slender body type
- Desired comfort temperature of ~0°C/32°F
- Sleeping pad: Exped 3R Ultra Mummy LW
- Most of the time I'm a ground sleeper, but sometimes I like the comfort of a hammock, so it should handle both (propably 80/20)
Based on my research (dozens of threads here on reddit and other forums, YT videos like this one by Dubber, etc) and my still very novice sewing skills I want to keep the design quite simple. So currently I'm set on karo step quilt with a sewn foot box. I'm aware that sewing the karo step will be a bit of a hassle, but it'll save me a lot of headaches when filling the down.
I've punched in my numbers in the karo step calculator, How does this look to you?
The same numbers in Dubber's spreadsheet:
I've never slept in a quilt before, so I'm unsure about some metrics like width and overstuff.
So now to my questions:
Did you notice any flaws in my thinking and design decisions?
What kind of pad attachment system should I use? And where are the optimal positions for it?
I've stumbled across this video and he concludes that a toggle and loop style system works better.
What kind of neck closure system should I use?
Tbh I don't feel comfortable with snap buttons.
My source for the 900FP down is extremtextil, so any hardware recommendation should also be available on their site.
