Pentel Orenz AT becoming scratchy when lead is in pipe

Hey all! So I've recently gotten into more expensive mechanical pencils and purchased both a Pentel Orenz AT and a Kuru Toga Advance Upgrade. While I've found the Kuru Toga's mechanism way too distracting for my use, I've taken a liking to the Orenz AT with 2B Hi-Polymer lead (Ain Stein 2B is on the way). The only issue is, however, that whenever the lead is pressed back to the lead pipe (as I've learned is how you should use an Orenz Nero/AT at least) the writing experience becomes MUCH more scratchy: lines become thinner and I have to press down more and it even lightly tears at my notebook paper. The aspect that bothers me the most is that this scratchiness is not consistent, it acts like I imagine it should with the traditional 2B smoothness/darkness for essentially one line of writing, then goes back to being scratchy and annoying. I could use the pencil as a traditional pencil with just pushing more lead but then I feel like I wouldn't be getting my money's worth. Any tips on how to solve this? Thanks!
