Could I file a police report without pressing charges/the state pressing charges for domestic abuse or would I not have any say in the matter?

I (22F) was recently in a dispute with a now ex-boyfriend of mine. We got into an argument and long story short I ended up being dragged/pulled out of the bathroom with my baby (11mo) in my arms. It resulted in unusual bruises, but I didn’t file a police report because I didn’t want to go to them and potentially ruin his life + we ended up making up. Should I still file a police report to document just in case something happens, and if I do file a police report will he be charged? I don’t really want him to be charged I just want documentation that it happened.
