My experience with battery warranty buy back
I've read some stories of others going through the process but I know most situations are unique with the variety of variables involved. Here's my situation in case it helps anyone going through a similar one. I know this is long but I tried to trim to the highlights.
I bought my 2017 in June 2021 and it had 9 bars and 72% SOH via leafspy. The firmware update was already completed so I knew I didn't have to worry about that. I was fortunate to buy with cash and paid just under $15K with taxes, tag, title, etc.
It dropped to 8 bars, 66% SOH, in late Nov 2022 and called Nissan/brought it to a dealer in early Dec 2022 to get the warranty process started. It was approved easily enough, I kept my car and was told it might be about 8 months. In Feb I checked in with my assigned rep and they were impossible to get a hold of but eventually said they still had no idea. In late March I got an email from an arbitration person at Nissan but tried multiple times to contact them and never even spoke to them. I kept trying to get in touch with someone in June and July and eventually called the general number and they said I should speak to the arbitration person that never attempted to contact me after the first email.
A new arbitration person contacted me in late July saying they're assigned to my case and said they was no option but to buy the car back. I reluctantly sent them all the info the same day and the next week a new arbitration rep called me saying the other person left Nissan and they were my new rep. I really didn't want to sell my car and got to the point where they said in an email that I could wait for a 40KWH battery but Nissan is prioritizing 2018 and newer cars over the 30KWH battery cars so it might be another year before I get one.
I got annoyed so I opened a case with the BBB Autoline. After submitting all my docs they denied my case because they only cover cars up to 3 years old. I'm not sure if this is only in my state (Georgia) but they said I can try to call the GA dept of consumer affairs. By this time I was assigned to a new rep (#5 if you're counting) and they said all the same info expect he explicitly said he would never email me any info because he 'isn't a big fan of writing things down'. He said if I deny the buy back now I might not get another offer later even if my car completely stops working. He also said Nissan wouldn't give me a loaner car even if my cars stops working while I'm waiting. There was no visibility into when one would show up and there never would be visibility.
I finally got the offer, and they'll pay me back 100% of what I paid originally. They didn't take off any for usage but didn't add anything for the fact I've been waiting for 10 months with a car that now barely gets 65 miles to a charge. Oh actually they'll give me a credit to get $500-$1500 off the purchase of a brand new Nissan which I laughed at. The dealer took a week to contact Morely (the company to actually take ownership of my car) and their earliest appt was 2 weeks away (almost a month after I signed their offer).
So I'll finally get rid of this car that I still love but will most likely get a used Bolt as a replacement. Good riddance Nissan. The only thing I'll miss is this great community.
