Can directors cross borders?

I have observed that in the recent past that the directors who tried their hands on directing other language films are facing more duds than success.

Vamsi - Varisu (average w.r.t Vijay’s other films) Anudeep - Prince (flop)

On the other side

Shankar - Game changer VP - Custody Lingusamy - Warrior

In case of bilinguals, the success probability is slightly better as most of the times, language is the only change, rest everything is Ctrl C and Ctrl V.

Is it the language barrier or the lack of understanding the taste of the native audience? What do you think that is not working for the directors who cross borders?
