Sudden crackling/ distortion at a really high volume

I was just using my IEM like normal suddenly there are crackling/ distortion sounds at a really high volume. Pressed the volume button and it is at the same level as it was. The crackling/ distortion came back to normal after a few seconds... I don't know what caused it. Anyone got any idea? It scared the shit out of me...
