Can I extend my work permit

Hi I recently moved over to Vancouver from Ireland and when going through borders I was given a 1 year visa instead of 2 as my insurance renews rather than having 2 years paid in full. I asked the insurance company beforehand if this was going to be an issue and they said they have never had anyone get less than the two years. My friend also is on the same insurance as me and he got 2 years and we both went through borders at the same time just different agents. Is there anyway I can get the 2 years or am I stuck with the one?
