Disrespectful Youth on The East?
I used to ski the east coast a lot but moved out west 2 years ago and haven’t skied in the east until last week. I don’t know if this is a new thing or I just didn’t notice it before, but the amount of absolutely disrespectful teens skiing mountains out here seems to have become a problem. We all used to “make fun” of the speaker kid, that’s not what I’m talking about. I see kids full on arguing in lift lines, pushing through them, not taking turns, cutting people off to get on the lift. While skiing they constantly are cutting off other riders and I saw 2 collisions happen within like 20 minutes of each other, no accountability for any of their actions even though it was quite clearly their fault. Ski patrol had to break up a fight as a result of a collision. It got to a point where a kid was arguing with my buddy on the chairlift after he told the kid that he wasn’t supposed to cut all 6 out of 8 riders off on the chairlift lift from the singles line and sit in the middle of the chair. Skiing over everyone’s skis and knocking a young rider down in the process. Kid responded with “Why the fuck do you care, you’re sitting on the lift aren’t you?”, my buddy gave up. Not to play the stereotype but they are mostly, but not totally, “park rats”. If I didn’t know better I can see why people would dislike park kids based on a couple interactions.
I’m not saying people are going to be saints, but what happened to basic human respect and decency on the mountain? I feel like out west this is not a common issue, just a rare incident here and there.
I’d love to hear some of y’all’s thoughts and experiences!
