Storage insurance, cancelation of plates

I am thinking about putting my vehicle in storage and get a storage policy on it. Right now, I am on a plan where they debit a fixed amount every month on the same date. To do so, I need to cancel my current insurance and surrender my plates, correct? Is there a way to keep the plate so when I insure it again after the winter, I have the same license plates?
